Specialized Self-defense Techniques in Thailand

Self-defense is a very essential skill for people who serve in the security industry. To be effective in their jobs, bodyguards, static guards, event guards, and VIP escorts should undergo martial arts training before being deployed in the field. Cash-in-transit service providers and bank couriers, who carry company money to the bank, are also trained in specialized self- defense techniques to protect them from criminals.

BKK Protection is a team of individuals who are skilled in martial arts and self-defence. As the number one security service provider in Thailand, we provide armed and unarmed self-defence classes to organizations who want to heighten their skills in the security environment.

Most martial arts, despite their distinct styles, promote peaceful confrontation to deal with conflicts verbally before engaging in a fight; and to encourage students to avoid physical encounters and to resort in hand-to-hand combat only when necessary.

Below are three of the most popular martial art styles in Thailand that provide specialized techniques in hand-to-hand combat. Though there are a lot of fighting styles that have evolved through time, these are our top choices as significant techniques in the security industry.

Aikido

Aikido is a Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba, inspired by his martial art studies, philosophy, and religious belief. He combined these learnings to create Aikido, which means the “art of peace” or “power of love”.

Aikido is centred on peace and harmony and is famously called “The Way of Harmony”. Aikido focuses on flexibility, mind and body coordination, concentration, health, fitness, and improving your self-esteem. On a physical level, Aikido doesn’t focus on punching and kicking your opponents, but on using their own energy to control them, to throw and push them away from you.

Aikido is a very effective self-defence for security professionals since it centres on locking, controlling, restraining, and breaking the opponent. The most common technique used in Aikido is the “kote gaeshi”, meaning supinating wristlock. The kote gaeshi is done by “externally rotating” the wrist, which will force the opponent to the ground as it creates a painful joint lock on the wrist and radioulnar joint. This technique is very useful for security professionals to impair an unruly or aggressive person because when it is executed properly, it can break the opponent's wrist and elbow or dislocate the shoulder.

A famous celebrity who uses Aikido is Steven Seagull. Aikido techniques were quite notable in his successful films like Above the Law, Under Siege, and Hard to Kill. In his movies, you often see him using kote gaeshi to incapacitate his opponents, leaving them in terrible pain.

Muay Thai

Muay Thai’s history can be traced back to the 18th century when a famous fighter named Nai Khanomtom used his fighting expertise to fight for freedom during the battles between the Burmese of the Konbaung Dynasty and Siam. Nai became a famous hero and his fighting style was called Siamese-style boxing. It later became known as Muay Thai which became a national sport.

Muay Thai is famously referred to as the “Art of Eight Limbs” or the “Science of Eight Limbs” because compared to boxing and kickboxing, which only uses punches and kicks, it also makes use of the elbows and knees as point of contact.

The training and exercises in Muay Thai are rigid as they involve running, shadowboxing, rope jumping, abdominal workouts, and weight training. Training in Muay Thai contributes to a person’s endurance, strength, health, fitness, and stamina, which are very important if you work in a security company.

The Thai movies Ong-Bak, Beautiful Boxer, and the 2017 film called A Prayer Before Dawn had contributed to the popularity of Muay Thai across the globe.

There are a lot of martial arts styles that you can choose from: Karate, Kickboxing, Taekwondo, Kung fu, Judo, Jiu-jitsu, Jeet Kune Do, Wing Chun, and many more. But your choice in selfdefence will depend on your preference and your willingness to endure the training.

Learning martial arts helps us understand more about the way of life, to be sensitive about the things around us, to appreciate nature, and take care of the environment. And though all martial arts have different styles of fighting, they all share the same purpose: to protect life.

People in the security industry can greatly benefit from learning martial arts and all the most important self-defence techniques. BKK Protection security professionals are trained experts in this art so they are dependable and effective in protecting the clients during life and death situations.
